Sell A Car - Valuation
Step 1 - Decide on the appropriate value
The easiest and most reliable way to decide how much your car is worth is to look at what prices are being asked for similar cars in your area. There are a number of ways to do this, ranging from freely available online tools, to trawling through local newspapers and magazines.
One good way to get a quick idea of the value of your car is to have a look at Parkers website.
Click here to go to Parkers Online.
Parkers is a long standing trade guide giving prices for used cars depending on make, model, age and condition. Simply fill in the details of your car and Parkers will give you a guide price for free!
Parkers prices are usually reliable, but another way to get an idea of a good price is to look at adverts of other cars that are currently for sale. A couple of good places to look are Loot and Friday Ads.
Click here to look for car adverts on Loot .Com
Loot is a general classified ads magazine which is published in newspaper shops but also has a website where you can search for ads. Look for cars similar to yours in your area, to give you an idea of what the competition are selling for. Remember to take into account features, mileage etc and try to find the closest match.
Click here to go to Friday Ads Website
Friday Ads is another very similar publication to Loot, coming out every Friday as the name suggests. It has different editions for different regions, so try looking for cars similar to yours in your area.
Ad Trader is another similar publication where you can look for ads to get an idea of the value of your car on the open market.
Another place to look is at specific car sales websites, such as Auto Trader.
Click here to go to the Auto Trader website
Auto Trader is the long established number one trade magazine for buying and selling used cars. It contains thousands and thousands of ads, and you are almost guaranteed to find a car similar to yours for sale on there. One thing to be aware of, however, is that a lot of the ads placed in Auto Trader are placed by professional traders rather than private individuals, and therefore the prices may be a little bit higher than private sales normally achieve.
Click here to go to Used Car Mart
Used Car Mart is another very similar website to Auto Trader, and is worth looking at if you have time to compare the prices you get on Auto Trader.
Finally, another fantastic place to check for car prices is, of course, eBay - the internet's number one auction site.
Click here to go to eBay Motors UK
eBay motors has grown significantly over the past couple of years, and is now a serious force to be reckoned with in the online car sales market. There are thousands of new listings added every day, and it's highly likely that there will be several cars listed on there right now that match the vehicle you are selling. On eBay it is especially important to be aware of location as searches give results from all over the country unless you specify a location to search on. Cars are not worth the same up and down the country although you can get a rough idea. Also pay attention to mileage and condition, one of the great things about eBay is that sellers have the ability to post many photos and long descriptions of their vehicles so you can get a very good idea if a car is similar to yours of the value that yours might fetch on eBay.
One final tip for eBay: If you register a username, you are then given the ability to search for completed listings. This means that instead of looking at auctions that are currently running, where the price may change significantly between now and the end of the auction, you can look at completed auctions and see their actual selling price. This is a fantastic tool for finding out what prices have actually been paid for cars, thus cutting out all the haggling etc that may take place when cars are sold in a local newspaper, for example. You will find this option once you are signed in, near to the bottom of the left hand menu. Once selected, the vehicles that have sold will have their prices listed in green, and the red prices show the vehicles which didn't sell because the price was too high. Very useful feature.
